The MacNeils were famous for their sailors
and quite often for their lawlessness on the high seas. The fifteenth chief
of Barra, Ruari MacNeil, was known as a "hereditary outlaw" and was dubbed
"Ruari the turbulent". He has also been described as the last of the vikings,
raiding ships of all sorts from his island fortress of Kisimul Castle.
Ruari eventually had a writ issued against him by the King, was captured
by his own nephews and taken in chains to Edinburgh in 1610. His son, Neil
Og then became chief. Ruari is a frequent visitor to the Border League
camp. When ashore, he brings "salvage" from the seas to the willing shoppers
of the faires. He is married to the Innkeeper of Meg's Tavern, Meaghan
herself.
Our Ruari MacNeil is portrayed by Dave Johnson, of Oxnard, California. Dave is the manager of his family's citrus ranch on the Oxnard plain, near Point Mugu. His wife, Sally, who plays Meg is a statistical analyst at Point Mugu. They both have been in the renaissance community for years, going back to the old Agoura fair. Their ranch house is a library of science fiction books, Sally's enviable collection of dragons (statues) and their family of dogs and cats. Sally is an accomplished seamstress and everyone's favorite cook. Dave dropped out of renfair for a few years, but never stopped helping behind the scenes. Now he's back and better than ever.
